Harder And Harder To Defend

Posted by Chad on November 29, 2005

The Vatican upped the ante today, not only reasserting its policy forbidding gay priests, but giving us all a refresher course on their feelings on homosexuality in general. The church has become extremely proficient over the past few decades at walking the line between damning the act and damning the individual. One might even say they’ve gone and perfected it. While it’s true that they can claim their beef lies with the activities of same-sex relationships and not with the people involved with them, I’m finding it an increasingly difficult pill to swallow.

Some of the more Christ-like points from the Vatican article:

  • It (homosexuality) does not represent a social value and even less so a moral virtue that could add to the civilization of sexuality.
  • It could even be seen as a destabilizing reality for people and for society.
  • In no case is this form of sexuality a sexual alternative, or even less, a reality that is equivalent to that which is shared by a man and a woman engaged in matrimonial life.

That line is starting to blur. You don’t want gay priests in the church? Fine. You want to love the sinner and hate the sin? Fine. But leave it at that. Please don’t push me any further to the side of Downtown Lad on this issue.
