Shady Acres

There’s probably a ton of information that I’m not “up on” concerning the recent proposal for Dubai World Ports to take over operation of terminals here in NYC and Jersey, but what I have read about the deal isn’t putting me at ease. Two things in particular bother me:

1. Homeland Security says that the security issue will remain in the hands of the US. Well zip-a-dee-doo-dah. Forgive me, but it’s hard for me to do the PC thing and not “profile” the UAE in this situation. I’d love to be able to give them the benefit of the doubt, but at this point in time I just can’t. Maybe the nation as a whole has our best interests in mind, and that would be swell. But it takes just one person – one employee at the docks who knows what security looks for and what they don’t – to really fuck up my day. Call me crazy if I’d rather have this job in the hands of the Brits than in the hands of a country that funded most of the 9/11 hijackers.

2. Why is Bush taking such a staunch stance on this? He has yet to veto anything in his presidency and yet he feels this port deal is worth exercising that option? Even after apparently being unaware of the deal to begin with?? Why is this all of a sudden the issue to illustrate how inclusive we are of the Middle East? And why is the UAE not being held to the same requirements that every other foreign company operating US ports are held to?

One of the main reasons I voted for Bush in ’04 was his position on national security and the War on Terror. But this whole thing is starting to shake my faith in the man. If he wasn’t even aware of the deal until after it was made, how can he be sure (so sure that he’s willing to veto any attempt to scuttle it) that it will in no way jeopardize the safety of these ports?

That’s what one trip to Duane Reade cost me today…. Normally, I go there to pick up one or two items – maybe some Advil, maybe some toothpaste. But not on this day.

Today, I went with a mission. A purpose. It was a decision that I struggled with internally for a week or so. Do I or don’t I? So many people who I respect have expressed their contempt for what I wanted to purchase. Yet, regardless, today, at noon, I decided “I do”.

I went out and bought the damn Fusion. And a damn 4-pack of cartridges. To the tune of $23.28. Plus tax.

To justify the trip as something I needed to do (and not something I did just for this one item that in all honesty I didn’t need in the first place), I picked up various other things: shampoo and conditioner, soap, some smokes…. Fourty-four twenty-one.

So a big YOU’RE WELCOME goes out in advance to the Gillette Marketing team. Ya’ got me. Job well done, you sonsuhbitches.

I swear to God On High that this shave had better be above and beyond a night alone with a drunk and uninhibited Jeremy Bloom.

Something Awful: Fashion SWAT – MySpace

Posted by Chad on February 19, 2006

Every now and then I enjoy hopping on over to Something Awful to see what the Fashion SWAT team of Zack and Dr. Thorpe are skewering.  This time around, I happened across their latest victims: MySpace.  Some of the images are a little too disturbing to have openly on the front page, so… click “more” at your own risk.

CoD? Idol Picks

Posted by Chad on February 16, 2006

I’ve been following the show now for the past three seasons, and I am fully aware that my opinion on who should stay and who should go means absolutely jack shit.

Nevertheless, I will give it to you: My pics for the last three girls and last three guys to remain on the show…. (after the jump of course.) Read the rest of this entry »

If I Had My Way…

Posted by Chad on February 15, 2006

American Idol would be on five nights a week and would win an Emmy every time it aired.

Between the drama of the Brittenum “My spirit is broken” Twins, the heart-wrenching story of Garret the Sheltered Cowboy, and Simon being Simon, this is by far the most entertaining season yet.

I’m not ashamed to admit it.  I love that damn show.

Crook The Vote

Posted by Chad on February 14, 2006

Let me tell ya’…. If this turns out to be true, Michelle’s gonna’ have to retitle her book for it’s paperback release because “unhinged” wouldn’t begin to scratch the surface.

From the Sun-Times:

The 36-year-old guard confessed that he allowed a convicted killer, two accused robbers and two others charged with aggravated kidnapping and battery to bust out of the jail to cast a shadow on Sheriff Michael Sheahan’s management of the complex at 26th and California.

But wait….  There’s more:

the guard admitted he helped engineer the escape to give a political boost to Richard Remus, a candidate in the Democratic primary election and the former leader of the jail’s Special Operations Response Team, the source said. (emphasis mine)

Obviously, Remus is claiming this whole idea is absurd and is accusing current sheriff Sheahan’s (how unfortunate) camp of orchestrating an ugly smear campaign against him.  But who exactly has the brains to come up with something so utterly evil and conniving?  Is Rove dabbling in local politics now?

…. Or is there another?

I Find This Strangely Satisfying

Posted by Chad on February 14, 2006

Al Franken, literary exposer of lies and the lying liars who tell them, has picked up and moved to the fly-over state of Minnesota in pursuit of a possible Senate run(CoD? aside: Should Jesse Ventura be given credit for starting the Minnesota gold-rush of washed-up celebrity/politician wanna-be?)

I take a sick sense of satisfaction in this only because you know Franken can’t be comfortable in that state.  (Nothing against the fine people of Minnesota mind you.  I’ve driven through the state and was really impressed with the size of your “Welcome To…” sign and the average daily temperature you guys got going on in late October.  Mint, both.)  But in regards to Franken’s “comfort zone”, compare the worlds of St. Paul or Minneapolis to Manhattan’s Central Park West and you’ll start to understand where my tiny bit of schadenfreude stems from.

Of course, I also have to relish in the fact that, should Franken actually run, there’s a chance the people of that great state (God willing) may actually send this man to be one of their representatives in the U.S. Senate…. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Cause 110 Just Didn’t Get The Job Done

Posted by Chad on February 12, 2006

16 year old kid pleads guilty to stabbing his mother last year… 111 times.  All because that damn nosey mother had discovered he was learning to make a bomb.

I’ve never looked into bomb making, or even tinkered around with pyrotechnics, so I can’t really state with any authority the rage that must well up from within one’s soul when a parent questions the reasoning behind your obsession with explosives.

But if this kid is any example, it’s a decent amount.

Duck Season… Wabbit Season… Cheney Season, FIRE!

Posted by Chad on February 12, 2006

Dick….  I’m gonna have to officially declare open season on you bud.  Sorry….

Kos and the Dems are gonna eat this up.

Pointer for next time?  Quail rarely (if ever) wear flourescent vests.  Or look like humans.  Just a friendly heads up.
